Turfing Texas started in the fall of 2011 as a side project for owners Kurt Kristynik and Mark Baker. Two guys with a history in coaching had connected via their contacts in the construction business and the basis if Turfing Texas was born. Cy Ranch High School head coach John Pope (now pitching coach at Rice University) asked Kurt if he could assist in installing some turf around the home plate area at their home field. He got in touch with Mark, made the plan and a few months later the first halo was complete!
Both Mark and Kurt have extensive athletic backgrounds that have been the foundation of their connections with coaches throughout the state of Texas. Mark was a standout football and baseball player at Burnett HS in the Texas Hill Country and eventually played college football and baseball at both Cisco JC and McLennan College. He completed his education at Southwest Texas and then started on a 7 year coaching career at Dulles HS. Since then, he has worked as a new home builder and for the past two decades with Allied Concrete in Houston. He and his wife Patty have two children, Bailey and Dru, and live in Tomball, TX.
Like Mark, Kurt was also a two sport high school athlete playing both football and baseball at Cypress Falls HS. He played collegiate baseball at both Texas Tech and Lubbock Christian University before coaching at Texas Tech while completing his Master's degree. He has worked in his family's flooring and remodeling business, Buffaloe Floor Covering, in Houston since 2002. In that time, he he has been the summer/fall varsity coach for Cy Falls HS and Cy Ranch HS. He and his wife Marti have two children, Cole and Chance Marie, and live in Cypress, TX.
